Wall Mount

Wall mount patch panels typically come in the 12-Port variety, and can be attached directly to your backboard, without the need of a 1 or 2 RU bracket. They work when there is no possibility of using a rack mount patch panel. Always try to use a rack mount patch panel if possible before using the wall mount patch panel. Rack Mount

Rack mount patch panels are the industries preferred patch panel type. They most commonly come in 2 sizes, 24-Port (1 Rack Unit [1 RU]) and 48-Port (2 Rack Units [2 RU]). In case you are wondering, 1 Rack Unit is 1.75", and RU's refer to how much rack space something needs, IE. 1 RU=1.75", 2 RU=3.5", 3 RU=5.25", 4 RU=7", etc. Patch panels will also have their rating on them somewhere, typically Cat5E or Cat6.
